ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Luis Suarez-Villa is Professor of Social Ecology, and
of Planning, Policy and Design at the University of California, Irvine. He specializes
in technology and innovation, and their relationship with
social change, economic development and regional
analysis.
Prof. Suarez-Villa has extensive international
experience, and has pursued his research abroad. He has twice been awarded Fulbright
fellowships, and has researched his interests in various nations in Europe,
North America, Latin America and East Asia. He has also been awarded honors and
fellowships by numerous organizations, such as the National Science Foundation,
the Mellon Foundation, the Organization of American States,
Cornell University, and the University of California.
The author’s educational background was very diverse.
He earned his doctorate at Cornell University, where he pursued studies in
development, international studies, policy and planning. His first university
diploma was in architecture and architectural engineering, but his academic
interests subsequently evolved through the fields of planning, economics,
regional science, public policy, sociology, and technology studies.
Prof. Suarez-Villa has been a faculty member of the
University of California since 1982. He is a co-founder of the Department of
Planning, Policy and Design at the University of California, Irvine, and of its
graduate programs. Prof. Suarez-Villa has also been affiliated at various times
with
the Institute of Civil Infrastructure Systems at New
York University, the United Nations, UCLA,
the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain’s National
Council for Scientific Research,
the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Brazil,
and the Institute of Technological Research at the
University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
